The Agfa Photo-Historama owns one of the most important collections devoted to the cultural history of photography. The collection of Erich Stenger which was acquired in 1955 and which even before the Second World War was regarded as one of the greatest private collections in the world forms the core of the collection. With unflagging enthusiasm Stenger built up a collection covering all aspects of the history of photography from the beginning of the last century. Initially, he was only interested in photographs but later his interest grew to take in cartoons, medallions, curiosities, secret cameras, lenses, diplomas and autographs. At the end of the 1920s his collection was so all-embracing and famous that László Moholy-Nagy (the photographer and later director of the Bauhaus) and some time later L. Fritz Gruber (a collector and founder of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie) requested exhibits to include in their exhibitions. In 1955 the collection with the special library which accompanied it were sold to Agfa. The valuable collection was suitably expanded by new acquisitions such as the 300 portraits by the photographer Hugo Erfurt in 1969 and more than 1000 cameras from the estate of Hanns Wendel in 1971. The collection achieved a unique status worldwide with the addition of roughly 20,000 photographic and reproduction devices from all fields of the photographic industry in the 20th century from the archives of the Agfa Kamerawerk in Munich.

After having been housed in temporary accomodation for many years in Leverkusen, in 1986 the collection found a new home in the new museum building on the Rhine. Parts of the Foto-Historama are made accessible to the public in a series of changing exhibitions and special presentations. In addition, large themed world-class touring exhibitions are regularly organised.
